Horizon Europe : Supporting Excellence in Innovation and Research in Europe

Horizon Europe is the European Union’s most ambitious framework programme for research and innovation.

It represents far more than a simple funding programme; it embodies Europe’s commitment to scientific excellence, industrial competitiveness, and addressing major global challenges.

Horizon Europe is therefore the EU’s flagship initiative in the field of research and development.

What is Horizon Europe?

Horizon Europe, endowed with a multi-billion-euro budget over seven years (2021–2027), is designed to strengthen Europe’s position as a global innovation hub. It is structured around three key pillars:

Pillar 1 – Excellent Science

Supporting fundamental research and scientific excellence, paving the way for tomorrow’s technological breakthroughs.

Pillar 2 – Industrial Competitiveness

Promoting innovation within European companies, with a focus on emerging technologies and digital transformation.

Pillar 3 – Global and European Challenges

Funding innovative solutions to address major societal issues such as climate change, public health, and sustainable food systems.

Objectives of Horizon Europe

The programme aims to strengthen the EU’s scientific and technological foundations, particularly by developing solutions that address political priorities such as the green and digital transitions.

It also contributes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while boosting competitiveness and economic growth. It is the EU’s flagship initiative for supporting research and innovation, from concept to market deployment.

With a budget of €95.5 billion, including €5.4 billion from Next Generation EU, the programme complements national and regional research and innovation funding.

“Horizon Europe” succeeds the previous framework programme “Horizon 2020,” ensuring continuity in Europe’s research and innovation efforts.
